The Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science is concerned with the promotion of both public and animal health welfare. This involves the care of healthy and sick animals; prevention and treatment of disease of different species of animal, poultry and birds. Veterinarians play a vital role specially connected with public health importance, research, and other related areas regarding wildlife conservation and protection. Veterinary science also alerts people to maintain the sound health through monitoring and control of zoonotic diseases (About 70%, 44 Infectious diseases transmitted from animals and birds to human), food safety and security. Optimization of productive and reproductive performances of food animals gradually meets the nutritional demand of the nation. In Bangladesh about 70% people (Man and Woman) are engaged directly or indirectly with livestock sector. We can’t ignore the contribution of veterinarians in context of animal protein supplementation for our rapidly growing population.
This faculty was established as Government Veterinary College at 1997. Later on academic activities of this faculty initiated in 2002. The college merged with Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University in 2008 and runs as the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science (VAS) with 8 departments- 1. Department of Microbiology ( Credit hour:21) 2. Department of Pathology and Parasitology (Credit hour:25) 3. Department of Dairy and Poultry (Credit hour-18) 4. Department of Anatomy and Histology (Credit hour:14) 5. Department of Animal Science and Nutrition (Credit hour:18) 6. Department of Genetics and Animal Breeding (Credit hour:06) 7. Department of Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics (Credit hour:48) 8. Department of Physiology and Pharmacology (Credit hour:18), including Basic and Social Science(Biophysics and chemistry of Biomolecules, English, Rural Sociology, Metabolism of Biomolecules, Biostatistics, Livestock Economics, Agribusiness Administration, Livestock Extension-(Credit hour:18) and Internship: 22 credit 208 in total.
Realizing the importance of animal health and production, the faculty produce skilled graduates with combined course curricula- veterinary animal health 68.10% and production course (Animal husbandry) 22.16% and Basic 9.73% with 6 month internship and Externship programme. Our faculty offers undergraduate- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Post graduate- Master of Science (MS), and Doctoral (PhD) degrees for the students. Not only the DVM graduates but also for MBBS doctors, provisions available for MS and PhD degree from this faculty aligned with one health concept (Human and Animal Health). Presently international students are being graduated (DVM, MS, PhD) successfully from this faculty. We strongly believe in international collaboration, joint research activities and students exchange program. For this, we have already MoU with some worldclass universities and veterinary faculties for internship, students exchange program, post graduate training, research, cultural exchange and so on. Under this faculty one Veterinary Teaching Hospital equipped with laboratory facilities, Operation theatre, and modern diagnostic tools like X-ray, Ultrasound etc. A well equipped Ambulatory Mobile Hospital is under processing.

Veterinary and animal science together constitute a very vital discipline that provides on one hand for the prevention and treatment of land animals and for the production of healthy productive livestock and poultry on the other. In fact Veterinary and Animal Science is an essential component of Agriculture particularly where animals are important drought power. The prime objective of the establishment of the Veterinary and Animal Science (VAS) faculty at HSTU is to make concerted efforts towards achieving the goal of providing up-to-date and quality education to ensure the protection of health of our animals and improvement of their productivity as source of food and power. The faculty produces confident and dedicated professionals to meet national and international demand in the fields of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science.
