PROJECTS
- Assessment of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials in Soil and Foodstuffs from Barapukuria Coal Fired Thermal Power Plant Area, Dinajpur, Bangladesh
Funded by: Environment Radioactivity Research Network Center, Japan
Position: Principal Investigator
Description: The Barapukuria Coal-Fired Thermal Power Plant (BCFTP) is Bangladesh's first coal-based thermal power facility, operational since 2005, generating 250 MW of electricity. Annually, it consumes around 0.72 million tons (MT) of coal, producing approximately 0.08 MT of ash (BBS, 2022). According to Habib et al. (2018), concentrations of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs: U-238, Ra-226, Th-232, and K-40) in the soil near the BCFTP area exceed standard values. Elevated concentrations of NORMs in soil are known to lead to contamination in the food chain. However, there is currently no study addressing the contents of NORMs and the transfer factor of NORMs from soil to plants and food items in the vicinity of the BCFTP area. The primary objectives of the current study are as follows: a) Determine the levels of NORMs (Ra-226, Th-232, and K-40) in soil, plants, and various food items (rice, wheat, fruits, and vegetables) within the vicinity of the BCFTP area. b) Evaluate the transfer factor of NORMs from soil to plants and foodstuffs in the BCFTP area. c) Create GIS mapping illustrating the activity of NORMs in the BCFTP area.
- Detection and Quantification of Milk Adulteration with Palm Oil in Bangladesh by Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) with Chemometric Models
Funded by: Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Bangladesh
Position: Principal Investigator
Description: Milk is one of the most essential foods that supply our bodies with the nutrients. They need at every stage of life, which also has a huge cultural and economic significance (Cirak et al., 2018). Milk and dairy products are consumed by a huge portion of people in our society. Some dishonest producers produce adulterated milk in different ways for increasing their profitability. The milk adulteration issue is common practice in Bangladesh and also Globally (Bari et al., 2015; Poonia et al., 2016). In Bangladesh, frequent news in national newspapers and TV news channels about milk adulteration (Zoombangla 2023; ProthomAlo, 2023). Chanda et al. (2012), studied adulterated milk in the Barishal district in Bangladesh and concluded that most of the milk samples were adulterated with water, regardless of the locations and seasons of collection. Worldwide, different types of adulterants are used for milk adulteration, for example, palm oil, milk powder, sugar, urea, ammonium sulfate, sodium chloride, hydrogen peroxide, sodium carbonate, melamine, benzoic acid, and detergent, which is potential health hazards for consumers (Poonia et al., 2016; Jha et al., 2014; Coitinho et al., 2017; Maboob et al., 2017). In Bangladesh, water, palm oil, detergent, skim powder, starch, urea, and caustic soda are commonly used for milk adulteration. But, recently palm oil, water and detergent were highly mixed with raw milk to adulterate (Moonajilin et al., 2018; Basak et al., 2021). So, a rapid and non-destructive analysis method development is very essential for the analysis of milk adulteration with palm oil in Bangladesh.
- Development of a Rapid Analysis Method to Detect Adulterated Honey using FTIR Spectroscopy with Chemometrics Tools in Bangladesh
Funded by: University Grant Commision, Dhaka Bangladesh
Position: Principal Investigator
Description: Honey is one of the most widely consumed foods in the world as well as in Bangladesh. It is believed that pure honey is always natural. Different types of honey are sold all over the world. In Bangladesh, many kinds of honey (raw bee, litchi flower, mustard, black cumin, goran, khalisha, palm flower, etc) are produced. Recently, Wahidul Islam Sheikh, the organizing secretary of National Apiculture Foundation’s, claims that 50000 tonnes of honey are produced annually in Bangladesh. Whereas, the Sundarban, mangrove ecosystem generates about 50% of the national honey production in Bangladesh (Islam, M.R. et al., 2017). Pure honey is utilized for nutritional, medicinal and industrial purposes and valuable product on the global market; serving as a major source of foreign exchange for many countries. Natural bee honey production is decreasing day by day because of different challenges while demand is increasing as a result of rising consumer desire for natural product consumption. Such kinds of socioeconomic motivations honey are the main target of adulteration in Bangladesh as well as in the world. Adulteration of Honey particularly with sugar syrup is a major concern in Bangladeshi market. In addition to misleading consumers, adulterated honey causes health risks and also undermines the reputation of the honey sector (Skaff, W. et al., 2022). Now a day’s different methods are used to identify adulterated honey such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy, High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), electronic nose techniques etc. However, these techniques are time-consuming, frequently destructive, and lack of required accuracy and efficiency (Cengiz, M.F., & Durak, M.Z., 2019). Therefore, it is very important to develop an analytical method that can identify quickly and accurately adulterated honey with sugar syrup in Bangladesh. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy combined with chemometric tools are a potential solution for this problem. FTIR spectroscopy possesses the identification and quantification of chemical compounds based on their individual spectral signature. By extracting relevant information out of complex spectroscopic data, chemometric methods like multivariate data analysis and pattern recognition algorithms improve the accuracy and reliability of the analysis. The proposed research project combines modern analytical methods including FTIR spectroscopy and chemometric tools. Application of these techniques in honey adulteration analysis will contribute to scientific advancement, encourage technological innovation and improve the capability of the food safety sector in Bangladesh. It will help to ensure that the nation complies with food safety laws and enhance its reputation as a reliable exporter of high-quality honey products. Overall the development of a quick analysis method using FTIR spectroscopy and chemometric tools to detect adulterated honey with sugar syrup resolves a serious issue in Bangladesh. This research project intends to offer an effective and accurate solution that promotes safeguarding consumers and maintaining market reputation by integrity by supporting economic progress, technological advancement and guaranteeing regulatory compliance in the honey industry.
- Extraction, Production and Quality Assessment of Betel Leaves Essential Oil from Bangladesh
Funded by: Institute of Research and Training (IRT), HSTU, Dinajpur-Bangladesh
Position: Principal Investigator
Description: Betel leaves (Piper betle L.) have significant cultural and traditional value in Bangladesh, and its essential oil holds potential for various applications in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industries. The project aims to develop a systematic approach to extracting and producing high-quality essential oil from Bangladeshi Betel leaf varieties, considering factors such as optimal extraction methods, process parameters (temperature and time), and quality control measurement. So, different varieties of fresh Betel leaves will be collected from different regions in Bangladesh to ensure diversity in the essential oil quantity and chemical composition. The most efficient and cost-effective methods (steam distillation or hydro distillation) will be used for extracting Betel leaves essential oil. The physical quality (colour, specifc gravity, optical rotation, solubility and etc), phytochemical (total phenol, total flavonoid) and antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS) of these extracted oil will be analyzed by standard methods. The chemical composition (volatile organic compounds) will be determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify and quantify the key bioactive compounds present in the Betel leaves oil. This research will provide valuable information about the betel leaves oil’s aroma profile, medicinal properties, and potential applications. As well as, Betel leaf essential oil industry will be established in Bangladesh, which create opportunities for economic growth and cultural preservation
- Evaluation of seasonal variation of total phenol, total flavonoid and antioxidant capacity in Piper betle L. leaves from Bangladesh
Funded by: IRT, HSTU
Position: Principal Investigator
Description: Piper betle L. leaves have been extensively consumed for mastication, mouth freshening, medicinal purposes and other different forms by more than 600 million people worldwide, and it ranks at third position, surpassed only by tea and coffee. These leaves English name is betel leaf and it’s still lacked data, especially on their seasonal variation of total phenol, total flavonoid and antioxidant level in Bangladesh. In this project, we will try to quantitatively determine the best maturity stage (harvesting period) and best seasonal variation (over six growing seasons, followed by 12 months) based on total phenol, total flavonoid and antioxidant capacity of Piper betle L. from Bangladesh. The total phenol, total flavonoid, and antioxidant capacity will be measured by the following technique Folin-Ciocalteu, aluminium chloride, and DPPH and ABTS assay respectively. Principal component analysis (PCA) and Pearson correlation will be used to visualize the changes in total phenol, total flavonoid and antioxidant capacities and their relationship. These findings can be helpful to betel leaf loving consumers, farmers, traders, scientists, technologists, administrators and policymakers to understand the best harvesting time and best season to collect good quality of betel leaves. 2021-06-01 to 2022-05-31
